            <head>Biography</head>
            <p>Susan Hayes Ward was born in Abington, MA in 1838. She attended Wheaton Seminary from 1853 to 1855, and studied art in Boston, New York, Dresden and Paris. Later she studied at the Women’s Medical College in Boston. She taught at the Berwick Academy, ME; Guilford Institute, CT; and Knox Seminary, Galesburg, IL.</p>
            <p>Susan wrote and lectured on home art. She was an art critic for the New York Independent, 1889 - 93 and office editor, 1892 - 98. She also worked in the Home Department of Foreign Missionary Work, and was vice president of the Women’s Board of Missions and was a member of the American Oriental Society. Susan was the author of Sabina Hackett; Christus Hymn; The Green Guess Book; History of the Broadway Tabernacle Church, 1901; and George Hepworth, Preacher, Journalist, Friend of the People, 1903. She edited the Lucy Larcom Memorial Edition of Rushlight in 1894.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>Susan Hayes Ward's collection includes poems, songs and papers. Her Christmas greeting entitled “The Royal Guest” and the song “Fair Wheaton for the 75th Anniversary” are both part of Susan Ward's collection. Poems written by Susan for A Wheaton Month are: “First Day;” “Fifth Day;” “Seventeenth Day;” “Twentieth Day;” and “Twenty-sixth Day.” Also parts of her collection are sections from Susan’s copy book, 1854-57 and a copy of the winter term role book, 1854-55. Biographical information on Susan Hayes Ward is included in Lesley Lee Francis's Robert Frost and his Editors: Susan Hayes Ward, which was presented at the Philological Association of the Carolinas, 1984, as well as Lesley Lee Francis's “Robert Frost and Susan Hayes Ward,” from the Massachusetts Review, 1985.</p>
