Research by Subject: Documenting Your Research

CITATION & BIBLIOGRAPHY MANAGERS

RefWorks Wheaton Faculty, Staff, & Students only

RefWorks is a web-based tool designed to help you organize your references and use them to create bibliographies and format citations in papers. This bibliography manager essentially allows you to create your own personal database of references by manually entering reference information or by importing references from online library catalogs and article databases. It then helps you to create correctly styled in-text citations and bibliographies from your list of references.

Accessing Refworks On and Off Campus
Any Wheaton student, staff, or faculty member can create his or her own Refworks account. From on campus, simply choose a username and password to create your account.

For off-campus access, please contact Elliot for the Group Code.

Exporting References from a Specific Database
The Refworks Help includes a page with step by step directions for exporting from almost any scholarly database. You can also export from our library catalog, HELIN.

Write-N-Cite for MS Word 2007 (PC) & MS Word 2008 (Mac)
To use RefWorks with the newest versions of Word for PC or Mac, download the newest version of Write-N-Cite. You can also still download the older version for use with previous Word versions.

Zotero Free Resource

Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives within the Firefox (3.0+) web browser. Zotero allows you to automatically import references from online catalogs and databases, as well as open websites like Amazon, newspaper sites, blogs, even Flickr and Youtube. It also allows you to save pdf's, images, and other files along with the reference information. You can then easily create automatically formatted bibliographies and in-text citations from your library of references. Zotero is a production of the Center for History and New Media and George Mason University.

2.0 Version
The new 2.0 version now supports syncing your account between computers, and offers the possibility of creating collaborative group collections.

Some Limitations
Please note that Zotero is only supported with Firefox (not Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, etc), and it only runs within your computer's browser (it is not web-based, though the new version does offer web-syncing). If you prefer another browser, or if you often move between multiple computers, RefWorks might be a better choice for your citation management.

Documentation
Zotero provides excellent documentation about how to install, set-up, and use its different functionality.
