Full access to NYTimes.com and NYTimes smartphone and tablet apps for current Wheaton faculty, staff, and students. To register for a new account, users must have a valid Wheaton email address, and be on campus and connected to the Wheaton network. Once an account is established, login at nytimes.com or download the app from iTunes® (you will need to use an existing account, or create a new one). Includes access to New York Times articles published between 1851 through 1922, and between 1981 through current day. Access to the years 1923-1980 is limited to 5 articles per year for group pass subscribers. [note: for any pre-2011 articles not available from nytimes.com use the Library’s subscription to the New York Times Historical from ProQuest]

NPR News Unrestricted Resource
Probably the most highly regarded news radio network in the United States, and arguably the best-staffed one. Transcripts, recordings, and live streaming of programs are available.

An electronic gateway to local, national and international newspapers and U.S. media associations. 50States.com also provides quick state facts and maps.

C-SPAN Unrestricted Resource
Provides public access to the political process via television coverage of the U.S. House and Senate, the Supreme Court and the media.

CQ Weekly Restricted Resource Some full text available
Contains an non-biased, objective, and comprehensive roundup of virtually all Capitol Hill activity each week; 1983 - present.

Real Clear Politics Unrestricted Resource
Founded in 2000 by John McIntyre and Tom Bevan, Chicago-based RealClearPolitics.com (RCP) "culls and publishes commentary, news, polling data, and links to important resources from all points of the political compass." Updated continuously.


Democracy Now! Unrestricted Resource
"National, daily, independent, award-winning news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan González. Pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S., Democracy Now! is broadcast on Pacifica, NPR, community, and college radio stations; on public access, PBS, satellite television and the internet." Past shows archived from 1996- present.

Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

APS Online features over 1,500 periodicals ... from colonial times to the advent of American involvement in World War II. Titles range from America's first scientific journal, Medical Repository, to popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies' Home Journal. Dates of coverage varies; 1740-1940.

Extensive collection of digitized historical newspapers from France. A subset of Gallica, the French national digital library, the collection includes both major and minor publications, including Le Figaro, L'Humanité, and Le Petit Journal. Varying dates of coverage, usually ending around 1945. 

ZEPHYS Unrestricted Resource Some full text available
Extensive database of digitized collections of historic newspapers from Germany. Both scanned images and searchable fulltext are often available. Mainly in German, but with English instructions. 

Historical Jewish Press Unrestricted Resource Some full text available
Provides "a collection of Jewish newspapers published in various countries, languages, and time periods; displays digital versions of each newspaper, making it possible to view the papers in their original layout. Full-text search is also available for all content published over the course of each newspaper’s publication."

Thinking Critically About the News
FactCheck.org Unrestricted Resource
FactCheck.org, a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, "aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. It monitors the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases," and provides documented analysis. Archived December, 2003- present. Each article offers in-depth analysis and sources for further exploration of a topic, searchable by keyword. FlackCheck.org offers information on reliable websites to use for research; organized by topic and section.

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) Unrestricted Resource
FAIR is "a media watch organization offering constructive criticism in an effort to correct media imbalance."  Its approach is "to work for the inclusion of new viewpoints, not the exclusion of old ones." FAIR publishes Extra!, the award-winning magazine of media criticism, and produces the weekly radio program CounterSpin, the show that brings you the news behind the headlines.

On the Media Unrestricted Resource
"On the Media...casts an incisive eye on fluctuations in the marketplace of ideas, and examines threats to the freedom of information and expression in America and abroad."  Listen to the weekly program via streaming audio or read the transcript. Previous shows are archived back to 2001.
