Jabulile (Joy)

Inspiration During the rise of BLM and the Covid-19 Pandemic, black bodies were represented primarily in the media as objects of pain, suffering, anger and sadness. Having spent a large majority of 2020 in South Africa, I decided to dedicate my project to showing another perspective of blackness, a happier one.

Jabulile is the isiZulu word for joy and I thought that it was fitting for me to use my time in South Africa to capture what blackness looks like and how it does not have to be negative. Blackness in South Africa is diverse and multifaceted and the different faces of blackness is what I aimed to show in my project.
